    Gold was first discovered at this mining site in 1847 and it continues to produce gold. It is now open to the public with a museum, gold minining operation, and gem mining. Your $16 admission provides a single bucket of sand which you'll pan and most likely get more gold than the admission price. After panning for gold, spend some time in the gem mining stations. For gold enthusiests, they sell larger buckets and rent professional equipment.
